We own a nice two-bedroom two-bath condo in an older building and our condo fees which include all utitilities and Satellite TV (except Hi-speed Internet) is around $5,000 US per year. In addition we have to pay taxes (very little) plus Trust Fees--all of which amount to a few hundred dollars in total (sorry I don't have the figures at hand).
But the real kicker to me is the cost of living for food and even eating out is much less in Mexico for the same type of lifestyle--whatever that is. We had to drive up (to Canada) this week for a funeral and I was struck with how much more expensive "stuff" is here. Our price of gas in Canada is currently 1.20 cents per litre (over $4.50/gallon). When we filled up in Mexico it was around 70 cents/litre. And food. I went to our local store yesterday for a FEW simple groceries (a few items) and I think we paid over $30.00. For the same type of stuff (I'm only talking milk, bread, a few veggies) I'd pay way less in Soriana (my corner store). And eating in restaurants. A nice place for lunch takes us up to $50 here in Canada, and that isn't even splurging. The same level of enjoyment could have been had for well under 250 pesos.or, as Brenda said, much less than that.
I also agree with Brenda that part of what is great in Mexico is that it challenges one to live more simply. And that's good. I'm sitting here in our condo in Canada thinking "what do I need all this stuff for?" I'm going to go through my kitchen gadgets and save only what can be used for many things. (like a knife). Stuff breaks down and clutters and and....
I'm not being very scientific here but I really believe that you can live very comfortably on the amount of money you're talking about much more easily than you could live on that sum of money in Canada. And not feel deprived.
