Old Gigante, New Soriana |

Has Soriana totally taken over where Gigante was? Is it now the same as the one up near the Marina? Any changes/additions like the artisan breads?

Gigante is no more, at least at Plaza Coracal. The Soriana near the marina is much smaller. The new Soriana is different from what Gigante used to be. They
have more appliances and electronics than Gigante. The bakery is much smaller as is the cheese section I noticed. I would like to have Gigante back. Oh
well.

I believe Soriana bought Gigante and is going to convert all of them eventually.

All three Sorianas have different stuff, and even different prices on the same stuff. Weird.
In my opinion, the produce is the best near the Marina, the 'non-food' items are better at Plaza Caracol, and Pitillal, and Pitillal has a better wine selection (go figure). The Caracol one has some nice pates and whatnot in the deli department, that the otehrs don't have. (Left over from Gigante?) I have often found the artisan bread at the Marina Soriana to be REALLY stale. But the 'rustico' bread at Caracol is a good substitute. (When I don't get it from Artisan Breads on Morelos, or Hackl, over behind Banamex on F Villa, near Costco). |

Soriana bought Gigante in Jan.08 I believe. I agree with the post that all 3 stores have different items and prices of the same items.

From Patdale's post: The new Soriana is different from what Gigante used to be.
Do you mean that the former Gigante is now a Soriana store? Doreen and Dennis |

This past winter, did a little research. We suspected that because the Soriana in Pitillal caters more to the Mexican working class, while the Soriana at the Marina caters more to the tourist sector, that the prices at the Pitillal Soriana would be lower on most items for the benefit of the Mexicans. We compared the prices at both stores on several basic items that we considered would be items that locals would need. On the 3 specific items that we priced, ALL 3 were more expensive at Pitillal!!! We were quite surprised. Doreen and Dennis |

Note the date of this is Dec., '07
MEXICO CITY, Dec 6 (Reuters) - Retailer Soriana said on Thursday it was buying more than 200 stores from a smaller Mexican rival for $1.35 billion, nearly doubling its supermarkets and challenging market leader Wal-Mart. Soriana (SORIANAB.MX: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) agreed to buy 199 stores in Mexico and seven outlets in Los Angeles from Gigante, tapping the U.S. market for the first time. With the acquisitions, Soriana, the No. 2 Mexican supermarket chain, will approach the scale of market leader Wal-Mart de Mexico (Walmex) (WALMEXV.MX: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and will gain more negotiating power with suppliers. Soriana shares ended among the top gainers on the Mexican bourse, rising 6.12 percent to 33.65 pesos. "This is a really good acquisition for Soriana, very strategic, and it boosts its presence in Mexico City," said analyst Marisol Huerta with Actinver brokerage. "It strengthens it to face up to the competition from Walmex." Gigante (GIGANTE.MX: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) shares were halted on the Mexican stock exchange for much of Thursday after soaring 14 percent. The suspension was lifted after the session ended. Gigante said most of the 25,000 employees at the Mexican supermarkets it is selling Soriana will keep their jobs as part of the deal. |

From Patdale's post: The new Soriana is different from what Gigante used to be.Yes it is now Soriana. But what I meant is that they didn't keep it the same as when it was Gigante. Some things are different as I mentioned in the post.
