When I heard that the owner of this new spot at the corner of L. Cardenas and Constitucion was planning to specialize in Southern (USA) Cuisine, I was concerned. When I'm in Mexico, I just don't want mashed potatoes or cornbread or chicken fried steak. In fact, I rarely eat that stuff when I'm at my parents in Oklahoma. However, after dining twice this week at Coconuts, I'm afraid that's all changed. On my first visit I was impressed with the warm colors and overall feel of the restaurant inside. They are still working on the exterior signage and such. My margarita (45 pesos) was tasty and served just as I asked. Chicken vegetable soup (25 pesos)tasted so fresh I would have sworn they made it from scratch as I ordered it. The owner, John, brougt me an order of fried green tomatoes which I loved. My entree of meatloaf (90 pesos), baked potato and green beans was some of the most delicious comfort food I've tasted, ever. Everything cooked just right, not greasy, well flavored and piping hot. The accompanying cornbread and basil bread was delicious. They cook everything from scratch, on site...better than Mama does...(Don't tell Mama).
The second visit was even better with the bacon wrapped filet minon (150 pesos), collared greens with vinegar, mashed potatoes that were the best I've ever tasted and spinach bread this time along with the cornbread. Desserts looked amazing but I couldn't begin to touch it.
All you can eat specials each night from Country Style Ribs to Chicken Fried Steak are priced the same as the regular menu price.
The staff is super attentive and the crowds have been steadily increasing over the last few days since opening only 10 days ago.
