I agree with Pat, it's definitely not a one day trip. It takes about 6 hours by bus over some fairly windy roads to get there. There have been a number of accidents on that road, so we chose to go in the daytime. (Hopefully, there's a good chance that the driver will be rested and not borracho!) We took an economically priced bus ($40./RT each) and it had great accomodations, velour padded seats, tinted windows, curtains, bathroom, little T.V.'s every 6 rows with 2 movies, air conditioning, etc. I think the driver made 2 stops for food and stretching. Since my novio was familiar with the route, he requested a particular stop where he knew of the best tacos and we treated the driver to lunch since he accomodated our request! Vendors also come onto the bus for your convenience. Public transportation is very good in Guad. also.

There are so many lovely old buildings, you could just do that one whole day. There also seems to be a church on every corner, literally! Luis tells me that back in the days of old time terrorism, robbers used to go into the houses and ransack them. Every house had a secret tunnel to the church. Hence the need to have them close together.

Downtown is busy and has a lot of shopping opportunities. But hold off, go to the 3 story, block long, shopping plaza El Mercado de San Juan de Dios (or Plaza Tapitia) where everyone has a little stall. It could take days just to go through all of it. The bottom floor has a lot of eating places (we didn't) and you can get some amazing deals from the vendors (we did).

Since he had family there, we did a lot of visiting and he had some dental work done. While we were there they had the festival of La Virgin de Zapopan going on (October, I think). What a fabulous fiesta. The main streets are closed off and many people come dressed in regional costumes, playing instruments. They walk for miles, some crawling, in their devotion.

Please stop at a "birreria", (the restaurant Las Cinco Esquinas comes highly recommended) and have a bowl of birria, stewed goat in a mild chilie broth, yummy! I wish I could be of more help but we were only "partial tourists". Hope ya'll have fun.
